Milford Sound

Milford Sound

Located in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park which is near the bottom, left of the South Island, the easiest way to describe Milford Sound is waterfalls, mountains rising from the sea, and rain. Milford Sound likes its rain. Up to 8m per year in fact. But don't let that put you off - if it weren't for the rain, you wouldn't have all those waterfalls and that lush vegetation.

Some reach Milford Sound by hiking the famous Milford Track. You can also travel by road. There is only one road into Milford Sound and the road ends at the small township of Milford (overlooking Milford Sound), which consists of little more than a hotel, public toilets, car park, and a wharf. It is this wharf that sees thousands of tourists as they embark on a boat journey through Milford Sound, to the Tasman Sea, and back. I highly recommend an overnight cruise. Real Journeys are one of several operators to provide overnight tours and they also provide kayaks for your enjoyment.
