HTML 5

HTML 5 (or HTML5) is the next version of HTML. It is the fifth major revision of HTML - the core language of the World Wide Web.

HTML Tags/Elements

HTML 5 includes many elements brought forward from HTML 4.01, as well as many new elements.

When was HTML 5 Started?

Work on the HTML 5 specification began in 2004 and is still a work in progress.

When will HTML 5 be Ready?

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has estimated that the HTML 5 specification will be an official recommendation in late 2010.

Ian Hickson, editor of the specification, has estimated that it will reach the W3C Candidate Recommendation stage during 2012, then become an official recommendation in the year 2022 or later.

While this may sound like a long time (probably because it is!), it doesn't mean we won't be able to use HTML 5 until then. We can start using some new HTML 5 elements now (albeit with limited browser support).

Although it will be quite some time before it has full browser support, some browser manufacturers have already started to implement parts of HTML 5 (such as <canvas> support and <video>

Also, as the HTML 5 specification develops, browser manufacturers will continue to implement changes in accordance with the specification.
